How to Remove Grease Stains from Clothes Without Spreading Them

Grease stains are stubborn—but with the right steps, they don’t have to be permanent.

Grease stains are one of the most common laundry problems, especially from cooking oils, fast food, or cosmetics. The biggest mistake people make is washing grease stains too quickly with hot water.

Start by blotting excess oil with a paper towel—never rub. Sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch on the stain and let it sit for 10–15 minutes to absorb the grease. Shake it off, then apply a small amount of liquid dish soap directly to the stain.

Gently massage the soap in and rinse with warm (not hot) water. Check the stain before drying—heat can permanently set grease marks. Repeat if needed before washing normally.

Using the right products and patience can save clothes that would otherwise be thrown away.
